DIY TIPS
to declutter your wardrobe
Change the way you feel about your wardrobe and love the way you look!
Whether you are a busy mum, professional, or someone with a demanding lifestyle, I know exactly how you feel – you are short on time and your wardrobe is making you unhappy.
It is so common to have a wardrobe packed with clothes yet feel that you have nothing to wear! Or does your wardrobe just feel dated, not suit your current shape or lifestyle and simply doesn't reflect who you are and how you want to feel?
Here are a few reasons why:
People don’t stay the same size and shape. Pieces that you bought a few years ago might not be suited to the current you!
We add new items to our wardrobes without clearing out the pieces that no longer work for us. We accumulate too many clothes. Too many clothes means we can’t see what we have!
We ‘panic buy’ or make impulsive purchases of items that aren’t right for us!
When your wardrobe has been carefully edited you may notice a few things happen:
You’ll remember what you actually own, particularly when transitioning between seasons. There’s always a sneaky little surprise hidden somewhere!
Getting dressed in the morning will become easier.
You’re less likely to purchase items that are similar. You don’t want to end up with ten of the same thing!
Following these steps will help you feel more control of your wardrobe:
-
Start by picking one section of clothing ie; jeans or pants You try each item on - does it fit? do you like how you feel in them?
Remove from your wardrobe any of the following:
• Clothing with stains, discolouration, holes or rips
• Anything that looks very worn or show signs of ageing in style
• Pieces that you like but need replacing as they are so worn
• Clothing that has shrunk or is ill fitting ie; too big or too small Badly scuffed shoes, which bring down your outfit
• Old jewelry that is tarnished or broken
Additional Tip: Keep a list of what you love but need replacing. As this can become part of your shopping wishlist of items needed.
-
Make up pile for each category;
To Keep, Maybe or No (donate/sell)
It is important to look carefully at each item and try everything on. Don’t spend too long dwelling on each item but ask yourself these questions:
• When was the last time I wore this?
• Is it in good condition? If not, is it repairable and am I willing to fix it?
• Does it fit me well?
• Does it suit my current lifestyle?
• Does it align with my signature style?
• If you have clothes in your wardrobe with tags still on? Why have you not worn it yet?
Maybe Pile: An assortment of reasons, why you may call it a maybe. Losing weight and you may fit into it soon, you like it but find it hard to style, re-look at it and how you can make it work. If you do not visit this box in 6 month’s time, then time to donate.
No Pile: They just go, bag them and take them straight to the be donated or if they are really modern and in excellent condition, then look at donating to Dress for Success. Or if you have designer wear that no longer works for you, look at selling it.
Additional Tip: Be ruthless. Now is the time for you to be really through on what is serving you in your wardrobe.
-
If you have your clothes organised into categories or colours. This will make dressing so much easier.
• Long sleeve tops, hung up
• Short sleeve tops, hung up
• Jackets, hung up
• Coats, hung up
• Pants, hung up
• Skirts, hung up
• Dresses, hung up
• Jeans, hung up if you have room in your wardrobe or alternatively, folded in drawer
• Sweaters, folded up (you don’t want to stretch out your nice wool jumper or get coat hanger indents in them)
• Shorts, folded in drawer
• Shoes in shoe compartment or in clear shoe boxes
• Belts on a belt hanger or curled up in a drawer
• Scarves on a scarf hanger or folded up in a drawer
• Jewellery, easy to access trays or jewellery box
Then you colour coordinate each section starting with lightest to darkest. This way it is easier to find what you are looking for when getting dressed.
If you don’t have enough storage space in your wardrobe. Then possibly box up your clothes as per season that you don’t use.
Replace all of your old wire or broken coat hangers with the same style of coat hangers. Either felt, plastic or wooden. Also proper skirt hangers.
-
Create a list of things that you need to be replaced or that may fill a gap in your wardrobe. This will allow you to understand what you need to purchase, and you won’t just go out and buy the same items you already have in your wardrobe.
